What Beltane is, every year
Beltane is the cross-quarter sabbat that lands on May 1 each year, halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. In the Wheel of the Year it marks the height of spring: fertility, fire, blossoming, and the return of warmth in the northern hemisphere. Traditional celebrations light bonfires, weave flowers, and honour the land waking fully into growth.
Because it's calendar-fixed, Beltane falls on the same date every year — only the weekday and the moon phase around it change. (Some traditions also track an "astronomical Beltane," the true solar midpoint, which drifts a few days; both are noted in each edition below.)
How to work with it, whichever year you land here
Beltane's energy is generative and embodied, so the practice leans toward the senses rather than the head:
- Mark a threshold: light a small flame, open a window, bring blossom or green indoors.
- Name what you want to grow this season — then tend one concrete first step, since Beltane rewards follow-through over declaration.
- Let it be seasonal and local; spring arrives differently on a coast than in the mountains.
In the Atlas, Beltane sits in the Lemurian tone — earthy, heart-open, devoted to the living world. If that resonance calls you, the sabbat is a natural time to return to it; the resonance journey can mirror your leanings without fixing a label.
Each year's edition below has that year's exact date, the astronomical midpoint, and the sabbats that bracket it around the Wheel.
